Mall and Multiplex, Raj Group, Bhopal

Location: Bhopal

Year: 2007

Design team: Vikram Pawar, Mahima Seth Pawar

Collaborators: Ashish Bhattacharya, M+S Designs

The project proposal was a collaborated effort for the “Raj Group” in Bhopal. The team in Bombay was the designing team, whereas the execution would have been done by the Bhopal team.

The proposed site was a corner site in a Residential locality with high rise structure and govt. quarters around it. Streets are to its West and to its south, thus making the South and West approaches visually important approaches. The entrances/exits are sited along these streets such that movement of vehicles and people forms loops that is they would naturally go across the mall thus making all retail outlets visible and accessible.

The design would accommodate selected positions on the facade for signages while maintaining a strong identity for itself.

The Mall was conceptualized as combining the comfort environment of mall and the vibrancy and organic nature of bazaar. Material and technology was explored to reduce energy consumption without compromising on the comfort factor of the users and the aesthetics of the building.

The mall itself would have housed:

  1. Hypermarket.
  2. Anchor shops.
  3. A large book/toys store.
  4. Multiple retail outlets of fashion and accessories.
  5. Fine dining restaurant.
  6. Food court.
  7. A large gaming zone.
  8. A Multiplex with 4 screens of 1200 persons’ capacity.
  9. A banquet hall.

This project would require co-ordination between various consultants such as Structural; Mechanical, electrical & plumbing (MEP); Multiplexes & Communication systems; solar energy consultants.
