Historical religious towns, provide us the opportunity to study the sacred element believed to be at the root of all Urbanism.
Jejuri is an important pilgrimage town receiving annual pilgrim population of @ 1 crore and the peak single day population touching 5 lacs. It is an important destination for Khandoba (a form of Shiva) worshippers and is a Kuldevata for almost half of Maharashtra. Jejuri is also an important stopover for warkaris on their annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. The town along with the festivals & rituals associated with it is an important heritage for the people of Western & Central India and the responsibility of conserving this heritage is not of the local population alone.
